A dye sub aluminum sheet is a flat aluminum piece with a polyester coating on the surface. That coating bonds with dye sublimation ink under heat and pressure. At around 190 °C, the ink converts to gas and locks into the coating layer permanently.

The print sits inside the coating. It does not sit on top. So it will not peel, scratch off, or fade quickly under normal use.

The aluminum base stays flat during pressing. It does not warp or distort like fabric or wood. The result is a sharp, full-color image on a rigid metal surface.

This material is used in photo printing, award making, sign production, and personalized gift manufacturing. Setup is fast. No laminating or extra finishing is needed after pressing.

Alloy & Temper

The aluminum base affects surface quality, stiffness, and how well the coating adheres.

AlloyTemperKey PropertyTypical Use
1100H14 / H18Very smooth surface, easy to cutPhoto panels, ornaments, thin blanks
3003H14 / H16Good flatness, moderate strengthSigns, nameplates, award plaques

5052H32 / H34High strength, corrosion resistantOutdoor signs, industrial labels
5052H32Good resistance to bending fatigueHeavy-duty tags, marine-environment use

For indoor photo and gift products, 1100-H14 is the most common base. For outdoor signage or industrial labels, 3003-H14 or 5052-H32 holds up better over time.

Dye Sub Aluminum Sheet Coating & Surface Finish

The Dye Sub Aluminum Sheet coating type controls the final look. Unprinted areas show the base finish. Printed areas display the full-color design.

Comparison: Dye Sub Aluminum vs. UV Direct Printing

Many customers ask why they should choose a dye sub aluminum sheet over UV direct printing. Here is the comparison.

How to Achieve the Best Print Quality

To get the most out of your dye sub aluminum sheet, follow these tips:

  1. Remove the Protective Film: Every sheet comes with a thin plastic film. You must peel this off before putting it in the heat press.
  2. Use High-Quality Paper: Use professional sublimation paper. If the paper is cheap, the colors might look dull on the metal.
  3. Temperature Control: Most panels require a temperature of 180∘C to 200∘C. If it is too hot, the coating might turn yellow.
  4. Pressure: Apply medium, even pressure. This ensures the gas enters the coating evenly across the whole sheet.

Why Choose Our Dye Sub Aluminum Sheets?

Our products are designed for professionals. We focus on three main things:

  • Coating Consistency: We ensure there are no dust spots or bubbles in the polymer layer.
  • Color Pop: Our white base is “pure white,” which makes your colors look exactly like they do on your computer screen.
  • Flatness: We use premium Alloy 1100 so your prints never curve or warp.

How Dye Sublimation Works on Aluminum

Aluminum alone does not absorb sublimation dye. The polyester coating does. Without that coating, sublimation ink will not bond.

The process has three steps:

  • Print the design onto sublimation transfer paper using a sublimation printer
  • Place the transfer paper face-down on the coated aluminum sheet
  • Press at 185–200 °C for 45–90 seconds, then peel hot

The Dye Sub Aluminum Sheet coating absorbs the dye. Unprinted areas keep the original surface color — white, silver, gold, or black depending on the finish chosen.

FAQ

Can dye sub aluminum sheets be used outdoors?

Yes. Use 5052-H32 alloy for best corrosion resistance. Add a UV-protective overlaminate or clear coat after printing for longer outdoor color life. Without extra protection, expect 1–3 years of outdoor color stability.

Does the print fade over time?

Indoors, color stays stable for 3–5 years under normal light. Avoid continuous direct sunlight exposure without UV protection. The image does not peel — it may gradually lose saturation in very high UV conditions.

Can both sides be printed?

Yes, if the sheet has a double-sided coating. Press each side separately. Allow the sheet to cool between pressings.

What printer do I need?

Any inkjet printer converted or designed for sublimation ink works. The printer outputs to sublimation transfer paper. The paper then transfers the design to the coated sheet under heat.
