Never bolt aluminum directly to bare steel. Use nylon or rubber washers to separate the metals. Use stainless steel or zinc-coated fasteners. If the metals must touch, apply a barrier coat of zinc-rich primer or epoxy between them.
Is pre-painted aluminum worth the extra cost?
For fleet trucks with branded colors, yes. The factory coating is baked on at high temperature. It is more durable than most shop-applied paint. It also saves labor hours in your build shop. For one-off custom trucks, mill finish plus shop paint may be cheaper.
